McKinsey & Company – The Business Value of Design

1. UNDERSTAND

The first step is to understand the project goals in as much detail as possible. This includes kick-off meetings, ideation, extensive research, and project scoping.

2. User Research

The next step would be to conduct testing of the current experience using a minimum of five people chosen from the target demographic. From here, we ask pointed questions regarding your brand and platform to discover not only what users enjoy, but also what they find challenging or difficult.

3. Compile Inspiration

Reviewing inspirational sites, comparable sites, and referring to personal collections, I am able to compile specifics that relate to the project goals. Finding and sketching design elements that align with the clients desires and requirements create opportunity to assess styles, and patterns we enjoy.

4. Concept

With the content hierarchy defined, I create a minimum of three wireframes: baby step, next step, and north star.

5. Design

Using our assembly of strong resources, we are ready to flush out designs. Each web page, or app I design includes a prototype, often done in code. Through meetings for review, I encourage feedback to ensure the project remains in alignment with the clients needs.

6. Test

Once the designs and prototypes are complete, it’s smart to go through another cycle of tests and see if the pain points discovered in the user research phase have been settled. This involves detailed documentation as well to ensure transparency.

7. Optimize and Deliver

I carefully screen my work to ensure a smooth hand-off. This includes optimizing images, making sure my code is minified, and SEO ready. I also make sure my layers and files are properly organized and have functional names. I include documentation and package my files including everything on the project checklist.
